ResMed Corp

While the company was founded in 1989, our technology story dates back to 1981 when Professor Colin Sullivan and colleagues at the University of Sydney described and developed nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), the first successful non-invasive treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA).

Seeking to commercialise his patented technology, Professor Sullivan approached The Baxter Centre for Medical Research where Dr.Farrell was involved in further developing the CPAP prototype and undertaking clinical trials. When the Baxter Centre decided not to enter the sleep apnea market, Dr Farrell bought the technology from his former employers and established his own company to bring CPAP to the world – ResMed, short for Respiratory Medicine.

Delivering on his vision and promise, ResMed has become the world leader in sleep health. CPAP masks, machines and life support ventilators changing lives for millions. We have also become the world leader in remote and self-monitoring software, with more than 11M patients worldwide remotely monitored by their clinicians.

Peter Farrell is today the Chairman of ResMed’s Board of Directors . His son Michael “Mick” Farrell, has worked with ResMed for more than 15 years and has been CEO since 2013.
