A Legacy of Environmental Stewardship
Founded as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee (WALC) in 1954, ILACSD has been dedicated to improving the health and beauty of San Diego for over 70 years. Our journey began with the iconic slogan “I Love A Clean San Diego,” which served as the rallying cry for our anti-litter campaign in the 1970s. In 1980, it became our organization’s name, symbolizing our unwavering commitment to cleanliness and sustainability.
In 1989, ILACSD took a monumental step forward by merging with the San Diego Ecology Center, uniting two leading environmental organizations under one unified mission. Today, we are on a mission to foster zero-waste lifestyles and eliminate litter throughout San Diego County.

At ILACSD, the power of education, community engagement, and hands-on action. Each year, they reach approximately 100,000 students, adults, and businesses through environmental education programs, volunteer cleanups, and recycling initiatives. With over 900 workshops and 600 community cleanups annually, they are making a tangible difference in our region.
Our community cleanups alone are responsible for removing nearly half a million pounds of pollution from our streets, parks, and waterways every year. But our work doesn’t stop there. According to sponsors, “We are committed to empowering every individual to become leaders in conservation and waste-free living, ensuring the long-term health and vitality of our home”.
