Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign has achieved an extraordinary milestone, raising an impressive $200 million since she emerged as the Democratic presidential nominee last week. This remarkable fundraising feat underscores the enthusiasm and support for Harris in her race against the Republican nominee, former President Donald Trump.
An Influx of First-Time Contributors
The campaign announced its latest fundraising total on Sunday, revealing that 66% of the donations come from first-time contributors in the 2024 election cycle. This surge in contributions followed President Joe Biden’s announcement of his exit from the race and his endorsement of Harris.
Mobilizing Volunteers and Building Momentum
In addition to financial support, the Harris campaign has seen over 170,000 volunteers sign up to assist with phone banking, canvassing, and other get-out-the-vote efforts. With Election Day just 100 days away, the campaign’s momentum is building at a critical time.
Michael Tyler, the campaign’s communications director, highlighted the significance of this support in a memo: “The momentum and energy for Vice President Harris is real — and so are the fundamentals of this race: this election will be very close and decided by a small number of voters in just a few states.”
Record-Breaking Fundraiser in Pittsfield
Harris campaigned in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, on Saturday, where a fundraiser originally expected to raise $400,000 brought in about $1.4 million. This event was initially organized when Biden was still the leading Democratic candidate, reflecting the strong support Harris has quickly garnered.
Unifying Democratic Leaders
Following Biden’s exit, Harris rapidly unified Democratic support. Prominent figures such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, former House Minority Whip Jim Clyburn, former President Bill Clinton, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton were quick to endorse her candidacy.
Adding to this wave of endorsements, prodigious Democratic fundraisers former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama announced their support for Harris on Friday.
